Happy people are grateful people—or are they? All of us can think of people who “have it all” and are still unhappy, and we also know people who’ve suffered much and experienced hardship who radiate happiness. Why is this?

Brother David Steindl-Rast, OSB, an Austrian Catholic Benedictine monk, says happiness does not make for gratitude; gratitude makes for happiness. Steindl-Rast, who is known for his work in interfaith dialogue and the interaction between science and spirituality, has written a lot about gratitude and shares the key to grateful living in this short TED Talk. According to Steindl-Rast, a little lesson we were taught in childhood shows us the way to grow in gratitude and become happier people.
