A Prayer on the Path to Freedom

Comunità di Taizè - published on 05/17/16

"Let Nothing Disturb You"

Only God is enough.

“Life is full of beautiful things, but sometimes we don’t know how to enjoy them,” says Victor Manuel Fernandez, the Argentine theologian and friend of Pope Francis. He outlines a path to turn our meeting with God into a source of joy. There are many things that can get in the way of our freedom: we can become obsessed with external appearances, or become totally dependent on someone we’re in love with, for example. “The free heart,” Fernandez writes in his book Ossessioni, “which is not a slave to anyone or anything, enjoys what life gives it and dedicates itself to that which is possible to achieve.” We were not made to be slaves of anything, to close in on ourselves, to put ourselves in a box or restrict ourselves to a rigid, set way of life. “We were, in fact made for permanent development, until we reach a profound and sublime relationship with God, ever more beautiful and generous with others,” continues the theologian.

Today’s song from the world-renowned Taizé community is a meditation to aid us on this path to freedom. It is the prayer of St. Teresa of Avila:

Let nothing disturb you
Let nothing frighten you
All things are passing away
God never changes
Patience obtains all things
Whoever has God lacks nothing
God alone suffices
