I am slowly learning this life is not a walk in the park but an adventure. All great adventures include moments of danger, pain, and fear. In those times, just a little light can guide us. – Marie Miller
The song came about after a particularly terrible week and before what would become a series of unfortunate events in one, long “terrible summer.”
“I wanted to write a song that recognized the difficulties of life while still remaining hopeful and resilient,” singer-songwriter Marie Miller shared with Cecilia Music. “’This Side of Paradise’ is an invitation to bravery and acceptance, because no matter what happens we still got the moonlight.”
In the midst of a summer filled with heartache, a fallout with a close friend, and a stagnant music career, that bit of moonlight came in various forms: “I found myself surprised by dozens and dozens of curious times when joy almost violently broke through my misery. This would happen at a baseball game when the summer night was exactly as it should or at a dinner date with my grandfather who is exceedingly more hipster than me.”
For the music video, which features John Hollier (guitar) and Scott Mulvahill (bass), Miller was inspired by a Mumford & Sons Take Away Show and she set off in search of her own little enchanted forest for the shoot. “Yes, I could do the normal band in a studio thing, but it seemed too by the book for me,” wrote the artist.
Very apropos for the artist and her “curiously beautiful life.” She shares, “I am slowly learning this life is not a walk in the park but an adventure. All great adventures include moments of danger, pain, and fear. In those times, just a little light can guide us.”
