The Origin of 'First Things', and the Students Who Were Touched By It

Jeffrey Bruno

Hadley Arkes - published on 06/05/13

But with it all – against all of the stings of reproach – we come back to. . .those students; the ones who have gathered now, this past weekend, and the ones I’ll see again, when the cycle brings in other Classes next year and lets me rediscover the students who had, in a moment long ago, become dear to me.  They have been the blessings to be counted.  What would it have been if I had never come to know their wit and devotion?  In finishing my last book, I realized that I hadn’t set down a dedication.  The words I set down then could serve as well for this column in this season of Reunions:

For Michael Petrino ‘68 and Michael Petrino ‘03

Jay Beech ‘67 and Scott Beech ‘99

Doug Neff ‘70 and John Neff ‘09

Kevin Conway ‘80 and Jack ‘10 and Ryan ‘12

From the professor blessed by their presence in class,

And by their counsel in later years
