Africa’s Great Civilizations: ‘Empires of Gold’

Hour 3 explores the rise of Islamic kingdoms.

Another Thursday night theater! PBS and Professor Henry Louis Gates, Jr., are back to bring us the third installment of the visually stimulating documentary series aptly named Africa’s Great Civilizations. Beautiful high resolution images and the knowledgeable narration of Professor Gates leave us with nothing to do but get the popcorn.

Hour 3 explores the rise of Islamic kingdoms. See how settlers crossed a mountain to form Marrakesh and explore the great libraries of Timbuktu. Our favorite detail was learning that Mansa Musa, King of Mali, gave so much gold away on his pilgrimage that he destabilized the region’s economy.
