The opera singer Montserrat Caballé has just passed away, an icon of the Spanish bel canto and a woman who did not hesitate to publicly express her faith and love for the Virgin Mary. During her long career she performed many sacred music works. It is worthwhile to listen again to the extraordinary Our Father with which she delighted Benedict XVI during the 2006 World Meeting of Families in Valencia (Spain), composed by Jose Maria Cano, one of the members of the pop group Mecano.

The famous Spanish soprano sang the Ave Maria like no other. She was a woman of strong faith and deep love for the Virgin. “Singing La Vierge or Marie-Magdeleine, by Jules Massenet, or some other symbolic oratory … it’s almost as if you experience the deep pain of the Mother of God,” she said.
