You don’t have to be an alcoholic to recognize the absolute genius of the slogans that members of Alcoholics Anonymous use to help them stay sober. AA slogans are designed to give you a jolt of courage when you’re struggling with temptation, and they’re catchy enough that you can remember them easily when you need them most. Anyone trying to stick to a resolution is going to run into exactly what an addict might deal with on a daily basis — because after all, a long-standing habit is just another kind of addiction.

Everyone wants to start the new year off on the right foot, and make some real changes. That’s great! It’s just less great when only days after making the resolution you see that you’ve already failed. It’s after you’ve already failed that things are most serious — are you going to give up your resolution altogether, or stick with it? At the very least, keep these slogans in mind when you’re tempted to give up:
