In case you missed it, Sister Cristina, the Ursuline nun who became a viral sensation after winning Italy’s The Voice in 2014, offered up an inspired rendition of Lady Gaga’s “Born this Way” to Americans viewers of The World’s Best.
Having previously performed Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” Sister Cristina has become something of a master at reinterpreting pop songs.
Sister Cristina, in an interview with Kate O’Hare in Patheos, professed her admiration for Lady Gaga, who was raised as a Catholic.
“Lady Gaga is one of my favorite artists, and what strikes me, and I mostly like of her, in addition to her extraordinary artistic skills, is the courage with which she shows her great humanity,” she said.
“If only one day I had the honor to meet and talk to her, first I should contain the emotions and then I would ask her for advice and ideas to make the message of love that I carry everywhere through music even stronger (artistically speaking) and accessible to everyone (not only those who believe in God)!” she said.
While some have questioned whether it is possible to pursue a career in show business while being true to one’s vows, Sr. Cristina says that she is responding to Pope Francis’ call to reach out to the peripheries.
“It is my belief that all I do is prayer and has a missionary nature so that there are no contradictions between my being consecrated and the living of an experience in the world of entertainment. Wherever I go, I’m always accompanied by another sister of mine; we try to bring Jesus even through our presence,” she told O’Hare.
“The encounter with Christ does not close us in ourselves but opens us to others and to new life experiences, so we accepted Pope Francis’ invitation to open the doors of our convent and go out, go into the world to reach all those places where the love of Christ has not been known yet,” she added.
