On Mother's Day we get to celebrate those very special women in our lives. While you might be a mom yourself, or thinking of your own mother today, here are just a very few reminders of why mothers are truly a blessing.
Motherhood demands some saintly attributes
There are some striking similarities between the qualities demanded of today's moms and some of those of the ancient saints. While motherhood can be extremely demanding, it does encourage us to be the best of ourselves and give us the opportunity to appreciate the meaning and joy of sacrifice.
Motherhood is a true vocation, even when unplanned
Sometimes women become mothers when they least expect it. Many embrace this challenge and do their utmost to put their children first. As a result, these children have an opportunity in life, and who knows what they might achieve?
Moms never, ever give up
One of the tricky parts of being a mom is that it's a lifelong commitment. And while moms may sometimes question their abilities as a parent, just as with having faith, they hang in, knowing that the tough times can lead to some wonderful experiences ahead.
Moms offer much-needed wisdom
Although kids might battle through their childhood, going against everything their moms say, as they embrace adult life they'll soon appreciate all the sound advice their moms have imparted. Just as in our relationship with God, as we grow older and wiser we learn to cherish and appreciate what we often take for granted.
Moms will always have you by their side
Being a mom means you never switch off. Whether you're trying to grab a shower, or eat a sandwich, you're pretty much always on call -- even if your kids have left home! As you walk through life they'll always have your hand, maybe if it's a hand from afar. That bond is so precious, and moms will do whatever it takes to be there for you if you need them.
Moms face the toughest challenges but still lead by example
Being a single mom has its own set of challenges; whether emotional, spiritual, physical, or financial. However, there are some notable religious women who, as single moms, still managed to lead virtuous lives devoted to God. With their faith as their cornerstone, they were wonderful mothers who showed their children what was important in life.
You'll never tire of her embrace
Sometimes there's nothing better, or more needed, than having the reassuring arms of your mom wrapped around you. No matter your age, it's a feeling that will last a lifetime, as this beautiful video shows:
