On October 22, 1978, St. John Paul II asked Jesus Christ to make him a worthy servant of the People of God.

St. John Paul II’s entire life was marked with an extraordinary practice of humility. He did not seek power, nor did he shrink from God’s mission in his life.

Here is the prayer that he prayed on October 22, 1978, the day of his inauguration as pope. It is a prayer of authentic humility, asking of Christ the strength to be a servant.

Christ, make me become and remain the servant of your unique power, the servant of your sweet power, the servant of your power that knows no eventide. Make me be a servant. Indeed, the servant of your servants.
