Today is the World Day of the Poor, an initiative first started by Pope Francis in 2017, who reminded us: “Let us love, not with words but with deeds.”

Fortunately, there are many people who put their words into action in their everyday lives. Here are just a very few of our favorite stories that demonstrate how a little love, faith and compassion can go a very long way way.

Never too old to lend a helping hand

This elderly gentleman changed careers very late in life so he could lend his talents and time to serving others in need.

Thinking of others until the end

In his dying months, this adolescent selflessly gave his time to working in soup kitchens. While he was there he not only helped feed the hungry with food, he also nourished their souls by spreading the Word of God.

Celebrities getting involved

Far from the bright lights of Hollywood, some celebrities use their status to help others. Actor Chris Pratt used his social media presence to encourage others to feed the poor.

Religious using their time, skills, and faith

These sisters went out of there way — quite literally — to give medical aid to the poor. While they administered much-needed medical relief, they also provided a little balm for the soul.

A perfect example of paying forward
