Ask Jesus to use his key to set us free from the darkness that enslaves us in this world.

Jesus is often called the “Key of David,” and while this cryptic name is full of biblical symbolism, it also is connected to our own spiritual slavery.

Dom Prosper Gueranger composed a prayer in his Liturgical Year that highlights this symbolism and asks Jesus to free us from the prisons of darkness we are in.

O eternal Light, you shine in the midst of this world’s darkness, this prison where the captive, whom you have come to deliver, sits in the shadow of death. Open these prison gates by your all powerful key. And who is this captive but the human race, the slave of error and vice? Who is this captive but the heart of man which is thrall to the very passions it blushes to obey? Oh come and set free the world you have enriched by your grace and the creatures whom you have made to be your own brethren.
