George Bernanos (+1948):

People think it is easy to hope. But the only ones who can really hope are those who have first had the courage to despair of all the illusions and lies in which they had found security and which they falsely took to be hope. To hope means to confront. The man on the cross is not on it in order to conquer, but in order to bear witness to the point of death. The meek shall inherit the earth simply because only they will not have lost the habit of hoping in a world full of people in depair.
