Every morning since Pope Francis entered the hospital, my children and I have prayed for him and his health.

I was moved to hear their earnest and heartfelt prayers for this man who they’ve never met and who lives so far away from us, but who is so important and dear to us -- and to countless people all over the world.

Friends mentioned that their families have been praying for him, too, and I had the idea to write down some of these prayers from little ones.

A few of these responses are funny, reflecting young children’s confusion about the exact details (like mixing up saints with popes, or thinking Pope Francis lives in the U.S.). But all of them are very sweet and sincere.

These prayers are a little reminder of how Catholics around the globe are united in our concern and care for our Holy Father. We hope that these prayers from children reveal the unity of the Church family and how much the flock loves our shepherd.

“I hope you feel better pretty soon. Jesus, please help Pope Francis in the hospital. Please make him don’t be sick. I hope you are safe in your hard time. I want you to feel better pretty soon, because you’re my favorite pope. God, please help Pope Francis in his hard time. Amen.”

“Please please please, please please please, can he feel better really soon?”

“God, please make him be better right now. I wish he never was sick. I like him even though I don’t even know him. I love him and he’s part of God’s family even though he’s alive.”

“What! But Mom, I thought popes never get sick. Please help him get better.”

“God, please help the pope to be healthy again.”

“I’m glad that he is living a really long life. He’s a saint, right?”

“God, please help the pope to not be sick.”

“Dear God, please help Pope Francis to get better so that he can come back to America and be with us.”

“We should pray 20 Hail Marys for him. Let’s do it right now.”

“Dear Heavenly Father, we pray to you for Pope Francis’ health. Make him comfortable and feel better.”

“Dear God, please help our pope feel better. We need him here.”
