Friday evening, at 8:00 p.m., at the Altar of Confession in St. Peter's Basilica, as announced, the rite of closing the coffin of the Roman Pontiff took place. The ceremony took an hour.

Cardinal Camerlengo Kevin Farrell presided over the rite. The Master of Liturgical Celebrations read the rogitus, which was placed in the coffin at the end of the celebration. This text, currently only translated into Italian from Latin, gives an overview of the Pope's life and ministry.

The Pope's funeral will be held at St. Peter's on Saturday, April 26, beginning at 10 a.m..

In addition to those indicated in the Notification of the Office of Liturgical Celebrations (named below), some members of the deceased Pope's family also participated in the ceremony.

During the night, the Canons of St. Peter's ensured a presence of prayer and vigil over the body of the Pontiff until the preparations began for Holy Mass Saturday morning.

The presence at the Rite of Sealing of the Coffin on Friday included Cardinals Giovanni Battista Re, Pietro Parolin, Roger Mahony, Domenique Mamberti, Mauro Gambetti, Baldassare Reina, and Konrad Krajewski.

Those assisting at rite were also Archbishop Edgar Peña Parra, Archbishop Ilson de Jesus Montanari, Monsignor Leonardo Sapienza, the Canons of the Vatican Chapter, the Ordinary Minor Penitentiaries of the Vatican, the late Pope’s secretaries, and others admitted by the Master of Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations, Archbishop Diego Ravelli.
