The Vatican released a few photos of the rite of burial, which took place during about a half hour this afternoon at 1 pm (Rome time).

The wooden coffin of the pontiff, which covers his zinc casket, was imprinted with the seals of the Camerlengo (Cardinal Kevin Farrell), the Prefecture of the Pontifical Household, the Office for Pontifical Liturgical Celebrations, and that of the Chapter of the Basilica of Saint Mary Major.

The Basilica of St. Mary Major is now closed for the rest of Saturday, April 26.

Cardinals' pilgrimage

On Sunday, the basilica will be open to the faithful and at 4 p.m. on Sunday, the cardinals will visit the tomb of Pope Francis in St. Mary Major Basilica together.

The cardinals will pass through the Holy Door, visit the tomb of Francis, and then the chapel where the Salus Populi Romani icon is displayed. They will then pray Vespers (evening prayer) together.

See a video of the burial rite here.

From the Catechism:

1019 Jesus, the Son of God, freely suffered death for us in complete and free submission to the will of God, his Father. By his death he has conquered death, and so opened the possibility of salvation to all men.
