The cardinals gathered in Rome in general congregation to prepare for the conclave, issued a statement on April 29, 2025, thanking all those who participated in the funeral of Pope Francis.
The cardinals meeting in the "general congregations" noted how those at the funeral underscored Pope Francis' commitment to peace.
They mention the heads of Christian churches and representatives of other religions, as well as civil delegations — more than 160, including 54 heads of state. Their presence underscored “the unceasing commitment [of Pope Francis] to faith, peace, and fraternity,” they wrote.
They also expressed their gratitude to Vatican employees and to the Italian authorities and law enforcement agencies, who had to deal with the influx of 400,000 people on Saturday between the Mass and the procession of the coffin through the streets of Rome.
Finally, they welcomed the presence of the many young people who came for the Jubilee of Adolescents on Sunday, showing “the face of a living Church.” Some 200,000 faithful participated in the celebration.
