As the world awaits the white smoke signaling the election of the next pope, Italians have found a uniquely playful way to engage with the solemn proceedings: Fantapapa.
This online game, inspired by fantasy football leagues, allows participants to form their own "dream team" of papal candidates, or papabili, bringing a touch of levity to the sacred tradition of the conclave.
A game of eternal glory
Fantapapa, a blend of "fantasy" and "papa" (Italian for pope), invites players to select a squad of 11 cardinals they believe have the best chance of ascending to the papacy.
Points are awarded based on various factors, such as media mentions and the accuracy of predictions regarding the new pope's chosen name. While there are no material prizes, co-creator Pietro Pace emphasizes that the true reward is "eternal glory," as shared by Times of Malta.
The game's popularity has soared, with nearly 60,000 users participating since its launch shortly after Pope Francis's passing on April 21.
Pace, an AI architect at Microsoft, and his collaborator Mauro Vanetti, a video game developer, conceived the idea in February during Pope Francis' hospitalization. Their goal was to create a respectful yet engaging platform for people to connect with the conclave process.
A respectful engagement with tradition
While the notion of turning the papal election into a game might raise eyebrows, the creators have been mindful to approach the subject with respect. Pace notes that the game is designed to demystify the conclave and make it more accessible, especially to younger audiences.
"People are intrigued by Vatican power dynamics," he explains. "Playing allows them to try to get inside these dynamics and remove some of the mystery that shrouds them."
In a country where betting on the papal election is discouraged, Fantapapa offers a wholesome alternative that fosters community and engagement without the pitfalls of gambling. The game's emphasis on fun and education aligns with the spirit of respectful curiosity that many Catholics bring to the conclave.
The universal appeal of papal predictions
Fantapapa's success underscores a broader truth: The election of a new pope captivates the imagination of people worldwide.
Whether through earnest prayer, thoughtful discussion, or lighthearted games, the faithful find diverse ways to connect with this pivotal moment in the Church's life.
As the conclave commences on May 7, and the world watches for the telltale white smoke, Fantapapa stands as a testament to the enduring blend of tradition and innovation in Catholic culture. It's a reminder that while the Holy Spirit guides the cardinals' decision, the laity, too, participate in their own ways — be it through prayer, reflection, or even a friendly game predicting the next Successor to St. Peter.
And it's possible to think that even the avid football fan Pope Francis himself might be looking down from above with his own score card!
