The cardinals gathering for the papal conclave on May 7 will be making one of the most solemn decisions in the Church — electing a new pope. While their choice will shape the Church’s future, we all face personal decisions that can feel momentous too. You might not be choosing a pope (no white smoke required!), but perhaps you're discerning a career move or another major life change — the kind of crossroads that can bring pressure and uncertainty.

Yet that's exactly when faith can anchor believers — especially through Scripture. Just as the cardinals pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance, people can turn to the Bible for clarity and reassurance when they need direction. Here are six Scripture verses to help any discernment when you’re facing a big decision:

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart, on your own intelligence do not rely; in all your ways be mindful of him, and he will make straight your paths." Proverbs 3:5–6

This ancient verse encourages us to let go of the need to control every outcome and to trust God completely. When we face a big choice, we tend to overthink and try to predict every outcome. But if we entrust the decision to the Lord and stay faithful, He promises to guide our steps.

"But if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly, and he will be given it." James 1:5

These words from James offer a straightforward solution for indecision: ask God for wisdom, and He will give it generously. You don’t need to figure everything out on your own. A sincere prayer can open your mind and point you toward the choice that aligns with God’s will.

"Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." Philippians 4:6–7

Big decisions often cause anxiety, but St. Paul urges us to trade our worries for prayer. Instead of losing sleep over what could go wrong, he says to turn every concern into a conversation with God — thanking Him for blessings as we ask for help. Do that, and God’s peace beyond understanding will guard your heart and mind, giving you clarity.

"Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path." Psalm 119:105

This psalm paints a picture of walking in darkness with only a lamp to guide your feet. When you don’t know what to do, God’s word is that lamp, shining just enough light for the next step. You might not see the whole path, but each time you read Scripture it illuminates your next step and reveals insights you hadn’t considered.

"For I know well the plans I have in mind for you, says the LORD, plans for your welfare and not for woe, so as to give you a future of hope." Jeremiah 29:11

Through the prophet Jeremiah, God assures us that He has a plan for us all. Big decisions can be scary, but this verse reminds us our future is in God’s hands and full of hope, not harm. Even if the road ahead is unclear, we can trust God is guiding us toward what is good.

"We know that all things work for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose." Romans 8:28

Finally the Apostle Paul assures us that even if things don't go as we hoped, God can bring good out of any situation. If we love God, no choice or detour is beyond His providence. He’ll weave whatever happens into a greater good for us.
