The College of Cardinals has elected a new pope on the second day of conclave.

White smoke was spotted from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney at 6:08 p.m. and the bells tolled throughout the Vatican, meaning the 133 cardinal-electors have selected a new pope.

The cardinals elected the successor to the chair of St. Peter on the second day of the 2025 conclave. The last conclave to reach the third day was the election of Pope John Paul II. Both Pope Francis and Pope Benedict were elected on the second day of their respective conclaves.

The name and regnal name of the new pope will be announced shortly by Cardinal Dominique Mamberti, the Cardinal Proto-Deacon.
