The College of Cardinals presumably voted twice on the morning of May 8 and before noon, there was more black smoke.

Welcome to day two of the 2025 papal conclave.

The electors of the College of Cardinals did not elect a pope during their singular vote yesterday evening. They returned to the Sistine Chapel for the second day of deliberations and voting.

Black smoke was spotted from the Sistine Chapel’s chimney before noon -- somewhat earlier than estimated -- meaning the 133 cardinal-electors did not elect a new pope on the third ballot.

The second ballot would have been held earlier in the morning, but if that vote does not result in a pope, no smoke is sent up.

Thus the black smoke of about noon on May 8 means that the third ballot was inconclusive.

Siesta

The cardinals now have about four hours for lunch and rest at the Santa Marta residence. Thus, the process for the next vote will start up again in about five hours.

To be elected pope, a candidate must receive at least 89 votes from the 133 cardinal-electors.

The cardinals are scheduled for two more votes today: the two of the afternoon.

Possible white smoke this evening

There is a decent chance the College of Cardinals could elect a pope today: both Pope Francis and Pope Benedict XVI were elected on the second day of their respective conclaves.
