Masses in May to be celebrated by Pope Leo XIV

Pope Leo will visit all four major papal basilicas in Rome and ordain priests on the last day of the month.

The Vatican has announced various liturgies and events that Pope Leo XVI will preside over for the rest of this month, including his installation Mass and the taking possession of his cathedral.

May 18Sunday

Fifth Sunday of Easter: Mass of Inauguration of his Petrine Ministry.
St. Peter’s Square at 10 AM.

May 20Tuesday

Pilgrimage to the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls.
Prayer at the tomb of St. Paul.

May 25Sunday

Eucharistic Celebration at the Archbasilica of St. John Lateran, the cathedral of the Bishop of Rome, at 5 PM.
Formal installation at the Chair of Bishop of Rome.

Visit to Basilica of St. Mary Major at 7 PM.

May 31Saturday

Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Pope Leo XIV will preside over Mass with priestly ordinations in St. Peter’s Basilica at 10 AM.

It is not known if an initial papal trip will be nestled among these celebrations. Pope Francis was likely going to go to Turkey, to the site of the Council of Nicaea, sometime in late May. The Vatican had never formally announced the trip, nor given dates.

However, in his meeting with the media on May 12, Pope Leo replied to a journalist who spoke of Francis' plans, saying, “I know, we are preparing for it.”
