A trading card featuring Pope Leo XIV set an all-time sales record, Topps announced on Monday, May 12.
"NEW RECORD: Pope Leo XIV has set an all-time record for any non-sports Topps Now card," said Topps in a post on the company's social media pages.
The card sold 133,535 copies, said the company. It was only available for sale from May 8, the day of Pope Leo XIV's election to the papacy, until May 11.
The cards sold for $8.99 a piece.
A "Topps Now" card commemorates a current event and is only available for purchase for a short time.
Pope Leo XIV's card outsold Topps Now cards honoring LeBron James, Victor Wembanyama, and Paul Skenes for their various sporting accomplishments, said the New York Times.
(The best-selling Topps Now of all time card honors Los Angeles Dodger Shohei Ohtani becoming the first Major League Baseball player to hit 50 home runs and steal 50 bases in one season, noted the New York Times. That card sold 653,737 copies.)
Numbers
The card was announced less than three hours after Pope Leo XIV was introduced on the balcony at St. Peter's.
In lieu of the stats on a baseball card, Pope Leo XIV's trading card states "'Habemus Papam!' Leo XIV named 1st American pope" and is dated May 8.
The card also came in differing variants, said the Topps website. One, which is a foiled version of the card, was limited to 50 prints. Another, dubbed the "White smoke image variation" was limited to 267. Pope Leo XIV is the 267th pope.
