Pope Leo XIV sent "heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives" in the tragic aircraft crash in India today.
There were 242 people aboard the flight that exploded shortly after take off in Ahmedabad, India, bound for London. The plane crashed onto a college, where there were also victims. At least 200 people died, though a government official in India said he had met with a survivor.
Pope Leo sent a message through his Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, assuring prayers "for all those involved in the recovery efforts."
"Commending the sounds of the deceased to the mercy of the Almighty, His Holiness invokes upon all affected the divine blessings of healing and peace," the message concluded.
The bishops of India asked all citizens and everyone of good will to pray for the victims.
“Let us turn to God, our source of hope and consolation, and intercede for our brothers and sisters affected by this terrible disaster,” a statement from the bishops appealed.
Meanwhile, Cardinal Vincent Nichols of Westminster in London, where the plane was headed, also assured his prayer.
I pray for all of the victims of this morning's tragic airplane crash in Ahmedabad, as well as their families and loved ones who will come from across the UK and India. I commend also the response of the local emergency services and all who are providing support to those affected.
