A century on, the Church is still inspired by the saints who were raised to the altars in 1925.
Pope Pius XI was moved by the Spirit to canonize or beatify a number of holy men and women who would go on to become some of the most popular saints in modern times.
Here is a list of saints who are inspiring the world 100 years later.
1St. Thérèse of Lisieux
Known as the "little flower," St. Thérèse of Lisieux was canonized on May 17, 1925.
According to St. John Paul II in his apostolic letter, Divini Amoris Scientia, Pius XI was especially fond of the "little flower."
Pius XI, who considered Thérèse of Lisieux the "Star of his pontificate," did not hesitate to assert in his homily on the day of her canonization, May 17, 1925: "The Spirit of truth opened and made known to her what he usually hides from the wise and prudent and reveals to little ones; thus she enjoyed such knowledge of the things above -- as Our immediate Predecessor attests -- that she shows everyone else the sure way of salvation."
2St. John Vianney
Patron saint of priests, St. John Vianney was canonized on May 31, 1925, which that year was also the feast of Pentecost. Pope Pius XI wanted all priests to look to St. John Vianney for inspiration.
3St. Bernadette Soubirous
Visionary of Our Lady of Lourdes, St. Bernadette was beatified on June 14, 1925.
4St. Isaac Jogues
While they are celebrated on a single day, the North American Martyrs include eight saints who were beatified on June 21, 1925, including St. Isaac Jogues.
5St. John Eudes
Credited as one of the founders of the modern devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. John Eudes was canonized on May 31, 1925. He was canonized with St. John Vianney as they were both French priests.
6St. Peter Julian Eymard
Well known for his devotion to the Holy Eucharist, St. Peter Julian Eymard was beatified on July 12, 1925.
7St. Andrew Kim Taegon
Part of a group of Korean Martyrs, St. Andrew Kim Taegon was beatified on June 6, 1925.
This is just a small snapshot of the holy men and women who were either canonized or beatified 100 years ago.
