More than two dozen people, including many first responders, were wounded at an explosion at a gas station this morning in Rome.

“I pray for those affected by the explosion at a gas station this morning in the Prenestino Labicano neighborhood, in the heart of my diocese,” said Leo XIV in a tweet posted on the Italian version of his X account after a disaster struck eastern Rome on July 3, 2025.

The explosion, which was heard throughout the city at around 8:20 a.m., injured at least 27 people, authorities have reported.

Among the injured are 10 police officers and a firefighter, as well as the manager of the station.

The pontiff said in his tweet that he would continue to “follow with concern the developments of this tragic accident.”
