Leaving our home behind for several days, getting away from it all, experiencing a change of scenery, setting off to discover the unknown, (re)discovering the beauty of Creation ... This is the challenge that thousands of people take up every summer when they go on vacation.
For many people, hiking is a big part of their summer relaxation. Whether through verdant forests or up rocky mountains, walking through places of great natural beauty is restorative and exhilarating — as well as tiring.
Hikes are one of those adventures that shape the soul and the heart. Why not add a spiritual touch to this moment of relaxation and effort?
It can be as simple as observing some time in silence and reflecting on how God's goodness is reflected in his creation. Taking a moment to pray at the start can also be a good way to orient our activities in the light of God's will.
Here is a short prayer from the Christian Life Community* written especially for those setting off on a steep hike.
Prayer before a hike
Lord, You who make all things new, come again today and work wonders in our lives.
Give us the grace to listen freely, without prejudice, without hasty judgment and without fear.
Give us the courage to undertake ambitious projects and the patience to carry them out.
Give us, through our climbs, a taste for effort and for being attentive to others.
Give us the ability to offer our companions on the path a delivering presence.
Teach us to rest and to accept that we are tired.
Teach us to marvel at the beauty of nature.
May we return happier and stronger to our tasks in the service of God and our brothers and sisters.
As we strive to follow in his footsteps here on earth, grant us to reach the true Summit that is Christ.Amen.
