Want to work at the Vatican? There’s a website for that

In a quiet modern turn, the Vatican is now accepting job applications online. Gone are the days of long recruitment processes and hand-delivered résumés through ecclesial backchannels. The Holy See’s Secretariat for the Economy has launched a new page — cheerfully titled “Work with Us” — inviting laypeople to apply directly for open or upcoming positions across Vatican offices.

The announcement came Tuesday, as reported by Vatican News, and marks a new chapter in the Vatican’s long journey toward administrative transparency and reform. Until now, hiring staff at the Holy See largely involved sifting through a pool of existing CVs, often gathered informally. That process, while time-honored, wasn’t exactly streamlined — or visible.

“A central theme in the economic reform concerns personnel,” said Maximino Caballero Ledo, Prefect of the Secretariat. “We need people with the appropriate competence, motivation, and, above all, an ethical sense.”

The new platform is designed to help match those qualities with actual job openings.

According to Luis Herrera, Director of Human Resources for the Holy See, the site answers two recurring questions: How does one apply for a job at the Vatican? and What positions are even available?

For the first time, both questions now have public answers. Applicants can browse available roles, view qualification requirements, and submit materials through the site. If no positions match, hopefuls can still upload a CV for future consideration.

Herrera noted that the portal will also help meet staffing needs that often go unmet: “Dicasteries request people with specific linguistic or technical skills. This site helps us find the right match and opens the process to people who are genuinely interested.”

The reform doesn’t stop at external candidates. The Secretariat is also working to promote internal mobility. Whenever a post opens up, the announcement will be shared through the Vatican’s Employee Portal to allow current staff to apply.

Beyond job listings, the new website offers a transparent peek behind the Vatican’s administrative curtain. It includes documentation on financial oversight, procurement regulations, and the governance structures that keep the machinery of the Holy See turning — with accountability and canon law keeping pace.

“Work with Us” may not come with a choir of angels or a St. Peter’s view, but it does offer something equally compelling: a real opportunity to serve the Church through skill, professionalism, and purpose. And this time, all you need to start is a decent CV and a working wi-fi connection.
