Judge Frank Caprio, affectionately known as “the nicest judge in the world,” has passed away after battling pancreatic cancer. What set him apart from other judges was he inspired millions with his compassionate approach to justice.
He became a surprise internet star in his 80s, as videos from his courtroom show Caught in Providence amassed billions of views and over 20 million followers on social media. Fans around the globe fell in love with his wisdom, humor, and mercy in handling everyday people’s cases.
After nearly four decades on the bench, the 88-year-old Rhode Island judge retired in 2023 to spend time with his family. Yet even in retirement, Judge Caprio continued to touch lives -- and just this morning, he touched hearts again by sharing a personal trial with remarkable faith and humility.

Sadly, the battle proved too much for the octogenarian, and it was announced on August 20 that he'd passed away. In the message posted on his Instagram account, people were encouraged to pay tribute to Judge Caprio by taking inspiration from his life: "In his honor, may we each strive to bring a little more compassion into the world — just as he did every day."

A legacy of compassion and kindness
Frank Caprio’s fame stemmed from more than just television — it stemmed from kindness. On Caught in Providence, he treated everyone who entered his courtroom with understanding and compassion, whether they were single mothers struggling with parking tickets or elders on fixed incomes.
People were moved by how he listened patiently, cracked jokes, forgave honest mistakes, and often paid fines out of his own pocket for those in need. As one profile noted, Caprio’s temperament was unique for a judge -- he became the face of kindness in the justice system, as shared by Simon and Schuster.
This genuine care for others garnered him a devoted global following and unprecedented viral fame. It also built a supportive community that would rally around the judge when he faced a challenge of his own.
A courageous battle met with faith
In late 2023, Judge Caprio revealed in an emotional video that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Ever open and humble, the then-87-year-old turned to his fans not for sympathy, but for prayers. “People ask me, what can I do for you? … I would ask that each of you in your own way to please pray for me,” he said, expressing his belief that prayer, alongside medical care, is “the most powerful weapon” to help him survive, as shared by 10 WJAR.
Those simple words – “Please, pray for me” – highlighted Caprio’s vulnerability and faith, and they struck a chord with millions. As Jesus taught in Scripture, “Ask and it will be given to you” (Matthew 7:7), and indeed Caprio’s request unleashed a worldwide wave of support. Prayers and encouraging messages poured in from across the globe (even as far away as Iraq) in response to his humble plea.
The outpouring deeply moved the judge. He later shared that the sheer number of people interceding for him was “staggering,” and he believed it was a response to the compassion he had shown others over the years. In Providence, even the local bishop, Richard Henning, paid a visit to the Caprio home to offer a personal blessing. Judge Caprio called the bishop’s visit a “TRUE BLESSING” and said, “I was so grateful when Bishop Henning visited, prayed with me, and gave me strength."
Through this challenging time, the man who had spent a lifetime lifting others up found himself lifted by the prayers of others. It was a beautiful exchange of compassion: the giver became the receiver. And thanks in no small part to those prayers (and of course quality medical care), Caprio pulled through months of treatment with hope in his heart.
Finding strength in a Lourdes pilgrimage
By May 2024, Judge Caprio joyfully announced he had completed his final rounds of radiation treatment for the cancer. True to character, he publicly thanked everyone who had prayed for him along the way. But his journey was not only one of physical healing — it was clearly spiritual as well. After finishing treatment, the devout father-of-five made a special pilgrimage to Lourdes, France, one of the world’s most famous Catholic shrines known for healing and grace.
In a moving video shared online, the 88-year-old judge can be seen fervently singing the Ave Maria at the Lourdes grotto, where the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to St. Bernadette. Judge Caprio later described the profound impact the pilgrimage had on him, calling it perhaps the most inspiring moment of his cancer journey. He even said he “felt the Holy Spirit” during the visit -- a deeply personal encounter with God’s presence that left him filled with peace and gratitude. This faith-filled trip was a testament to Caprio’s character: even after a grueling battle with illness, he chose to give thanks and seek closeness to God.
While it seemed that nothing could slow the energetic judge down -- he even managed to publish a new memoir Compassion in the Court in the midst of all this -- Frank Caprio remained, above all, a man of prayer. He knows where his strength comes from. In Lourdes he prayed not just for himself, but for countless others fighting illness. “I prayed for everyone who needs healing,” he shared in one post, reflecting his habit of turning personal struggles into opportunities to empathize with others. Little did he know that just a few months later, he would again be leaning on the prayers of the worldwide community he’d brought together.
Renewed plea for prayers amid a setback
On his last morning, Judge Caprio revealed that his health journey had hit an unexpected bump in the road. In a heartfelt video message posted to his social media on Tuesday, the retired judge announced from a hospital bed that complications had brought him back under medical care. “Last year I asked you to pray for me, and it’s very obvious that you did, because I came through a very difficult period,” Caprio explained gratefully. “Unfortunately I’ve had a setback and I’m back at the hospital."
The news was difficult for his many admirers to hear -- after all, it had seemed his cancer was in retreat -- but Caprio delivered it with his trademark calm and courage. Importantly, he wasn’t sharing this update to alarm anyone, but rather to ask once again for prayers as he faces the road ahead.
“I’m coming to you again asking you to remember me in your prayers once more. So I ask you again if it’s not too much that you can remember me in your prayers.”
Despite the setback, Caprio’s spirit remained unshaken. He affirmed that he is still a firm believer in God’s providence and the power of prayer. “I think the Almighty above is looking over us,” he said with a faithful smile. “So remember me, please.” These simple, sincere words echo the very same trust he showed at the start of his illness. Frank Caprio knew he was in God’s hands, and he was not afraid to reach out for a little spiritual support from the community.
As he had noted before, the prayers of others gave him strength -- and strength was exactly what he needed. Within hours of his posting the video, thousands of comments and well-wishes flooded in, showing that people were indeed remembering him in prayer once more. His social media pages had effectively become virtual chapels, where followers from different countries and faiths were uniting to pray for a beloved man many have never met in person, yet regard as a dear friend.
And now, no doubt, millions will be joining in prayer for his soul.
The power and virtue of asking for prayers
Judge Caprio’s openness in asking for prayers is a powerful lesson in humility and faith. In a culture that often prizes self-reliance, it can be hard to admit “I need help.” Yet Caprio showed that requesting prayer is not a sign of weakness -- it’s a sign of wisdom and trust in God. By saying “Please, pray for me,” he acknowledges that there are challenges we cannot face alone.
It takes virtue to be vulnerable in this way. This humble request rallied a huge community around him, proving that when we ask, we often do receive support in abundance -- sometimes from the most unexpected places. In Caprio’s case, people from all walks of life and corners of the globe lifted him up in prayer, creating a network of grace that transcended borders and religions. Such solidarity is itself a beautiful fruit of faith.
Sadly, we now join in prayer for Judge Caprio's soul, as well as strength for his loving family. May his lifetime of compassion inspire us all to always keep fighting with hope and compassion in our hearts. As he firmly believed: “the Almighty above is looking over us."
