One day in July 2021, Eduardo Faria, a Brazilian man with an easy smile and a deep gaze, shared his story of faith with a small group of friends. A former Presbyterian pastor, Eduardo had recently found a new spiritual home in the Catholic Church.
The beginning of the journey
Eduardo Faria was born into a deeply religious family in the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil. From an early age, his life was shaped by the teachings of the Presbyterian tradition. Over the years, he became a pastor and dedicated his life to ministry, guiding his congregation with fervor and dedication. However, the routine and challenges he faced along the way awakened in him a longing for deeper answers.
In several interviews, including one with Vatican News, Eduardo said that he began to question the nature of the Church, the authority of the sacraments, and the religious tradition he had followed for so long. “The search for a richer and more complete spirituality led me to explore different currents of thought and religious practices,” he said in one of his reflections.
The influence of works and scholars
Although Eduardo was immersed in his Presbyterian faith, he began to read works by Catholic theologians such as St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. These saintly theologians, with their profound approaches to the relationship between reason and faith, brought about significant changes in his way of thinking. “They showed me that faith can be much more than just adherence to doctrines, but a search for a relationship with God,” said Eduardo.
In addition, contact with fervent Catholics and their experiences inspired him. “I saw the joy in their lives, the passion for living their faith. I began to wonder why I didn't feel that intensity,” he confessed. This questioning led him to participate in retreats and meetings where he had the opportunity to deepen his knowledge of Catholic doctrine.
The encounter with the Catholic Church
After a long period of reflection and experience, Eduardo made the difficult decision to become Catholic. In a moving ceremony, he was welcomed into the Catholic Church, surrounded by friends and family who, despite their initial concerns, shared his joy. “It was a moment of great transformation in my life. I finally felt at home,” Eduardo recalls with emotion.
His conversation about his conversion reveals the importance that family played in his decision. Although he had some fears about how this change might affect his relationships, Eduardo found support and understanding among those he loved.
Testimony of Faith
Today, Eduardo Faria is a fervent defender of Catholicism, dedicating himself not only to his own life of prayer, but also to bearing witness to his journey. He speaks about the importance of the sacraments, the Eucharist, and devotion to the Virgin Mary. For him, the Catholic faith isn’t merely a set of rules, but a rich tapestry that weaves together history, tradition, and personal experience.
“I’m Catholic for various reasons, but I’m a Catholic because only in the Catholic Church do I have an encounter with the Eucharistic Christ, with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament,” he told Vatican News.
“My testimony is that everyone should seek the truth on their own terms, without fear of asking difficult questions,” he emphasizes. Eduardo also shares his story at lectures and events, encouraging others to explore the richness of the Catholic tradition and develop a personal relationship with God.
A new legacy
Eduardo Faria now views life through a new lens. His conversion to Catholicism has transformed not only his own life, but also the lives of many people around him. He has become an example of faith in action, promoting ecumenical dialogue and uniting communities. On his Instagram profile he defends the faith and encourages Eucharistic Adoration, along with showing photos of visiting Rome and other Catholic themes.
“More than being a former pastor, I am a child of God in search of an authentic relationship” with him, concludes Eduardo, reflecting his new perspective on life in Christ. His story is a reminder that faith is an ongoing journey, full of doubts, discoveries, and above all, love.
