In Brazil — the country with the most Catholics in the world — a traditional festival in Ceará brings together huge crowds in honor of the Virgin Mary every year.

Attracting massive crowds isn’t easy. Famous singers and international events draw large audiences, but only a very popular figure can bring a million people out onto the streets.

Certainly, numbers are not everything, but they are an important sign of interest and commitment. At the Jubilee of Youth, Pope Leo XIV met with a million young people in Rome. Other papal events with his predecessors — especially during apostolic journeys, or with youth and families — have drawn similar numbers. Millions of pilgrims visit the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Tepeyac, Mexico, on the days before, during and after her feast day.

But those are well known examples. Brazil, the country with the most Catholics in the world, is by no means behind in this regard. The national shrine of Our Lady of Aparecida had more than 9 million visits during 2024. And this past August, an annual event saw in a single day more than one million people (including 3,000 volunteers) process in a “Walk with Mary” in honor of the Blessed Virgin in the northeastern Brazilian city of Forteleza, in the state of Ceará.

Tribute to Mary

Every year in the capital of Ceará, Our Lady draws devotees in August. This year,  August 15 — the feast day of Our Lady of the Assumption, patron saint of Fortaleza — fell on a Friday. At noon, Archbishop Gregório da Paixão started the event by celebrating Mass at the Shrine of the patron saint in the Vila Velha neighborhood.

In his homily, the archbishop emphasized that “more than a simple procession, the Walk with Mary is a sign of our living faith, a pilgrimage marked by hope. We walk with Mary to learn from her how to walk with Christ and with our brothers and sisters, especially those who suffer most.”

At 2:00 p.m., the 23rd edition of the Walk with Mary began, with the theme: “Walk with Mary, Mother of Hope.” The image of Our Lady of the Assumption was carried in a Federal Highway Police vehicle along the 7-mile route, where more than 20 vehicles with speakers led the songs and prayers of the faithful.

One of the most exciting and symbolic moments is the moment of the “mantle.” Just imagine: this crowd turns to Mary, trusting in her protection, and as a sign of this, they lift over their heads a huge blue fabric more than 330 meters long, symbolizing Mary's protective mantle (visible in the embedded Instagram video below):

Cultural heritage of Brazil

The celebration is already part of the state's official calendar and has been recognized as a cultural heritage of Brazil for a decade. This year, the walk ended at the Church of Santa Edwiges, in Jacarecanga, where the moving ceremony of the coronation of Our Lady was held.

To conclude, the faithful enjoyed concerts by the Shalom Missionary Ministry (a long-standing evangelizing group from Ceará), and also by Sister Kelly Patrícia, from the Hesed Institute.
