Countless websites claim that you can use your birth date to know which angel has been appointed to you to be your Guardian Angel.

In the age of the internet, we have an extra challenge in discerning what is good and what is evil. For example, there is an increasing number of websites that claim hidden knowledge about angelic beings.

Many Catholics get lured in by these websites; they might see a friend of theirs post something on social media and then immediately think it is true.

The topic of Guardian Angels in particular offers quite a bit of fake information on the internet that can lead a person into dark places.

Quest for hidden knowledge

The Catholic Church has been very clear about the quest for hidden knowledge with regard to naming those angels whose names are not found in the Bible. The Directory on popular piety explains, "The practice of assigning names to the Holy Angels should be discouraged, except in the cases of Gabriel, Raphael and Michael, whose names are contained in Holy Scripture."

As Catholics we only know for certain three names of God's angels: Michael, Gabriel and Raphael. Any other name is "suspect" because it is not part of divine revelation. We do not know if a name we receive is inspired by God, a human invention, or the name of a malevolent spirit.

The reality is that the entire world is filled with angelic beings, in addition to the Guardian Angel appointed to us at our conception.

Satan and his demonic spirits are constantly on the prowl and are ready to pounce on anyone who opens the door to them. An entire “religion” invites worship of angelic beings and claims to know the names of various angels. It is a dangerous path as the angels these people are worshiping may very well be demons in disguise, trying to lure them away from God.

All we need to know is what the Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us:

From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession. "Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life." Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God. CCC 336

Anything else is a grasping of knowledge in order to have a type of power over these angelic beings. What we need to do instead is to trust in their care for us and to pray to them, asking them to protect us in our time of need.

We don't need to know their name, only that they are by our side.
