One-night-only screening shares unforgettable testimony of healing, forgiveness, and divine mercy.

When Jesus came to earth to suffer and die, he left the most powerful message in the world: “You are not alone in your sorrow and your pain.”

God himself knows the feeling. He walks beside you.

Now a compelling and deeply moving film tells the true story of a man who “had it all” then lost everything, only to find peace and purpose through the mercy of Christ and the intercession of the Blessed Mother.

Don’t miss Broken Mary: The Kevin Matthews Story, showing in theaters one night only on October 7, the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary.

From celebrity to suffering and redemption

Before the age of social media and smartphones, radio was king, and Kevin Matthews was royalty.

One of the most popular on-air personalities in the U.S., Matthews partied with celebrities, counted sports legends like Michael Jordan among his friends, and had a loyal following of 10 million listeners. He had the world at his fingertips, his life the picture of worldly success.

But then he was diagnosed with a debilitating illness and his world changed overnight. His job gone and his health shattered, Matthews fell back on a childhood faith he’d often ignored—only to find something he’d never imagined.

The find that changed everything

One day, in a moment of quiet desperation, Matthews noticed a broken statue of the Virgin Mary beside a dumpster. He felt compelled to pick it up and bring it home.

That broken statue became a symbol of his own life—and of the love God has for all of us, even (and especially) in our brokenness. “Broken Mary” became a reminder that Christ and Our Lady walk beside us, bringing healing to the wounded human heart.

Matthews experienced a spiritual awakening and began traveling the U.S. with his cherished “Broken Mary” statue. He affectionately calls himself “Mary’s roadie” and shares an unforgettable story of sorrow and pain that turned into the peace Christ alone can give.

He wanted the world to know about the joy and inspiration his faith brought him—and that Christ is waiting to bring you the same joy, no matter how rocky your road or how broken your heart.

A film you won’t want to miss

On October 7 audiences nationwide will have the chance to see on the big screen the feature-length documentary Broken Mary: The Kevin Matthews Story

The film comes to you from Fathom Entertainment, in collaboration with ODB Films and Family Theater Productions in association with Windrider and Dynamic Catholic.

Broken Mary blends humor, heart, and deep spiritual insight in a way that will stay with you long after the credits roll.

Matthews’ story is interspersed with the stories of other people who have found healing through his witness and the Broken Mary statue. Many of these people have suffered some of the worst trauma and pain a person can experience, yet they bear witness to the hope found in Christ.

The filmmakers brought to life Matthews’ journey with moving eloquence, creating a documentary you’ll want to share with everyone you know.

“As a native Chicagoan and practicing Catholic, when I heard about his conversion and his newfound discovery of his faith, I was so moved and inspired that I wanted to share his story,” said Katie Reidy of ODB Films, producer of Broken Mary

“Kevin’s story reminds us that even in the darkest moments, hope can be found in the most unexpected places—sometimes right beside a dumpster,” said Eric Groth, producer of Broken Mary and president of ODB Films. Matthews found his iconic Broken Mary statue beside a dumpster. “His story is a testament to the power of grace and the fact that no one is too broken to be loved and redeemed.”

Matthews shared with Aleteia why he made the new film: “I hope people who see this movie can understand God is real. We all are broken, but loved by God.”

If there’s just one message to take from Matthews’ story, it’s the all-powerful mercy of God. Believe it or not, God’s mercy is infinite, and it’s there for each one of us.

There is nothing you can do that would make God stop loving you, or that he won’t forgive you for. No matter what we have done in the past, no one is beyond redemption.

As Pope Francis once said, “I see the Church as a field hospital after battle… Heal the wounds.” Each member of the Body of Christ bears battle scars, but through prayer and the sacraments, we find what we need to heal.

A message that matters

Broken Mary is about more than one man’s transformation. It’s about the mercy of God—infinite and unconditional. It’s about finding healing through Christ, the sacraments, and a loving Mother who never abandons us.

Kevin Matthews invites each of us to experience the healing that only Christ can give. As he says in the film, “I have less money, I have less things, but I’ve never been happier in my life.”
