Christians have lived in Gaza for centuries, dating back to the earliest times of the Church. The city of Gaza is mentioned in the New Testament in Acts.

Then an angel of the Lord said to Philip, “Get up and go toward the south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.”

In fact, after the first centuries of the Church, when monasticism was established, it came to thrive in this part of the world and Gaza was the home to various monasteries.

According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, "The first church built in Gaza itself was the work of St. Irenion (d. 393) whose feast is December 16. He was succeeded by Aeneas, and later by St. Porphyry (395-420), the true restorer of Christianity in Gaza."

This later opened the door to monasticism, which took root in Gaza and helped foster the spiritual life of many monks.

Here is a list of four saints who lived and died in Gaza:

1St. Dorotheus

During the 5th and 6th centuries there was a famous school of Christian rhetoricians in Gaza, and it appears that St. Dorotheus was drawn to the area because of them. He eventually joined a monastery there and was known for his holiness. His name is featured in a variety of the Sayings of the Desert Fathers. He died around 560.

2St. Dositheus

A disciple of St. Dorotheus, St. Dositheus is probably most well-known for his odd feast day. Aleteia writer Daniel Esparza, explains in an article how, "Dositheus of Palestine, born in the 6th century, is venerated as a saint by the Catholic, Orthodox, and Coptic churches. Considered the patron saint of Gaza, his feast day is celebrated on February 29 – thus, only in leap years."

3St. Barsanuphius

Living at the same monastery, St. Barsanuphius gave spiritual direction to a variety of people through his letters and died around 545.

4St. John the Prophet

Known as the teacher of St. Dorotheus, St. John the Prophet was similarly renowned for his holiness and lived at the same monastery in Gaza. He died around 543.
