Not since 1968: Pope will be at Swiss Guard swearing-in

The Holy See Press Office has announced that Pope Leo XIV will take part in the event, which will take place in the Courtyard of St. Damasus, in the heart of the Vatican.

“This is a profound mark of respect from a pope who is aware of our mission and our commitment,” said Corporal Eliah Cinotti. He sees this historic announcement for the world's smallest army as a gesture from a pope who is “very respectful of the institutions and people who work in the Curia.”

Usually, it’s the substitute of the Secretariat of State, the Vatican's “number three,” who represents the head of the Catholic Church at this ceremony, which also always includes a member of the Swiss Federal Council.

Before becoming pope, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost attended two swearing-in ceremonies, in 2023 and 2024. At the time, he was prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops.

“Leo XIV sees us every day and undoubtedly wanted to honor our service,” said the Swiss corporal. He adds, “For the first time since Paul VI, a pope will hear and see young guards swear to defend his life. What an honor for us!”

This morning, Pope Leo XIV received the members of the small army in the Clementine Hall of the Apostolic Palace. He paid tribute to the commitment of this corps, which has 135 members and was founded in 1506 by Pope Julius II.

“The Successor of Peter can fulfil his mission in the service of the Church and the world with the certainty that you watch over his safety,” he told them.
