10 Ways to embrace mornings (even when it’s still dark outside)

Dark mornings can feel heavy — but these small steps can help you start the day with calm, clarity, and purpose.

As the clocks roll back and mornings arrive in a blanket of darkness, getting up can feel like climbing a small mountain before breakfast. The cozy pull of the duvet, the sluggish light, the hint of seasonal gloom — all make it harder to start the day on the right foot. And for many, the darker mornings affect not just our routines but our moods too.

Yet there’s also a quiet opportunity in the stillness of early hours: a chance to recalibrate, to meet the day with peace, purpose, and maybe even a smile. With a few simple adjustments — both practical and spiritual — we can turn our mornings into moments of grace.

Here are 10 small but powerful ways to make mornings brighter, even when the sun’s playing hide and seek:

1Start with a stretch (and a short prayer)

Before checking your phone or rushing to make coffee, stretch your body gently and say a simple prayer like, “Thank you, Lord, for this new day.” A good stretch wakes the body, and a small act of gratitude reorients the soul.

2Let there be (fake) light

Invest in a sunrise alarm or switch on a warm-toned lamp as soon as you wake. Our brains respond to light cues — even artificial ones — which can help ease that groggy, “where-am-I?” feeling.

3Offer up your day

Even before your feet hit the floor, try saying: “Jesus, I offer you this day — every task, joy, and challenge.” This centuries-old practice helps set a peaceful, purposeful tone.

4Prep something small the night before

Lay out clothes, prep breakfast, or write a quick to-do list the evening before. This tiny act of kindness to your future self can work wonders for morning calm

5Get outside, even briefly

Open a window or step out with your tea for a moment. Fresh air (yes, even chilly air!) clears the head, grounds the heart, and reminds us we’re part of a much bigger world.

6Avoid the doom scroll

Resist diving into the news or social media first thing. Instead, consider reading a short Gospel verse, listening to a peaceful podcast, or sitting in silence for two minutes. Choose soul-fuel over screen-fog.

7Wake up to something beautiful

Set your alarm to calming music or nature sounds, or keep a favorite quote or image by your bed. Beauty — whether through music, words, or art — lifts us beyond the routine.

8Embrace one small ritual

Whether it’s lighting a candle, saying the Angelus, journaling for 5 minutes, or savoring your coffee in silence, build a tiny ritual that makes mornings feel meaningful.

9Eat something nourishing

A balanced breakfast doesn’t have to be fancy — even a banana and a slice of toast gives your brain and body the fuel to function. Think of it as part of caring for God’s temple (yes, that’s you).

10Be gentle with yourself

Not every morning will feel “good.” Some are sluggish, some emotional. That’s okay. You’re human. God isn’t looking for perfection, just your honest presence. Some days, simply showing up is enough.

Dark mornings don’t last forever — but learning how to meet them with grace can leave a lasting mark. With a little intention and a lot of love, you can transform your early hours into a time of quiet strength and joy. And who knows? You might even start looking forward to them.
