As the hurricane continues its path across the Caribbean, the Pope prayed for victims.

Pope Leo spoke from Rome today about the hurricane still wreaking havoc in the Caribbean. Noting the "catastrophic power" of Hurricane Melissa, and the "violent flooding" it is causing, the Pope lamented how "thousands of people have been displaced, while homes, infrastructure and several hospitals have been damaged."

I assure everyone of my closeness, praying for those who have lost their lives, for those who are fleeing and for those populations who, awaiting the storm's developments, are experiencing hours of anxiety and concern. I encourage the civil authorities to do everything possible and I thank the Christian communities, together with voluntary organizations, for the relief they are providing.

As Melissa continues its course, the various islands affected are still in the process of withstanding the storm or beginning to evaluate damages and assess needs.

Those who would like to contribute to relief efforts can donate to Catholic Relief Services here.
