Notre-Dame de Paris has long been more than a church -- it is a national treasure. When the fire severely damaged the beloved cathedral in 2019, hearts broke across France and beyond. Now, as the restored structure rises again, the French mint has chosen to honor it with one of the most everyday objects imaginable: a coin.

The Monnaie de Paris has released a €2 commemorative coin featuring the cathedral’s iconic façade. About 20 million of these coins will enter circulation, becoming tiny tokens of heritage in pockets across Europe.

On the obverse (“national side”), the coin shows the detailed West front of Notre-Dame -- its twin towers and central rose window -- while the reverse bears the standard map of Europe. Special collector’s editions will also be available, but most will appear as regular currency.

Marc Schwartz, CEO of Monnaie de Paris, explained that the design is “a way of celebrating all the craftsmen and women who worked on the site,” as reported in The Local. Stone masons, carpenters, and artisans from across France contributed to the cathedral’s restoration, and the coin honors that shared effort. Chief engraver Joaquin Jimenez described it as “a witness to the renaissance of Notre-Dame… now engraved for posterity.”

For a secular republic like France, placing a cathedral on currency might seem surprising. But Notre-Dame’s symbolic power crosses religious and cultural lines. Even non-believers see it as a cornerstone of French heritage.
