2025 CHRISTMAS CAMPAIGN
Please don't forget Aleteia in your end-of-the-year giving! Help us continue to provide free content.
I don’t always have time to sit down and read a physical book, but it’s easy to play an audiobook or podcast while I’m folding laundry or washing dishes. Audiobooks have made it possible for me to "read" so many more books than ever before.
But as much as I love listening to a great novel, sometimes I’m craving some spiritual enlightenment instead. And all the better if it helps me follow the liturgical year more closely, diving into the daily and weekly Scripture passages that the whole Church hears together at Mass.
So I was delighted to find out recently that there are a number of places to listen to great homilies online. These recorded sermons can bring a deeper meaning to our time at Mass as they allow us to think and pray about the readings ahead of time.
If you’d also like to listen to some powerful preaching that strengthens your faith, check out these great resources. (And for even more homily podcasts, check out this list!)
1Bishop Barron’s Sunday Sermons - Catholic Preaching and Homilies
Listen here to Bishop Barron’s weekly Sunday homily.
2Fr. Scalia's Homilies
I was lucky enough to be a parishioner of Fr. Paul Scalia’s many years ago, when I lived in Virginia, and I still remember how powerfully convicting his homilies were. Now that I live far away, I’m grateful to still be able to listen to his homilies on Spotify.
3Preach: The Catholic Homilies Podcast
A whole podcast dedicated to great homilies? Say less, we’re there!
4Let's Be Saints!
Listen in on homilies and Catholic faith formation with Fr. Luke Doyle, a priest of the Archdiocese of Kansas City in Kansas: “The purpose of this podcast is to help you make the decision to follow Jesus and allow Him to make you a saint.”
5Sermons in Times of Crisis: Twelve Homilies to Stir Your Soul
When you do have time to sit down and pick up a spiritual book, this one is a gem. Fr. Paul Scalia offers an introduction and commentaries on homilies from some of history’s greatest preachers, including the following:
- St. Ambrose of Milan
- St. Augustine
- St. John Chrysostom
- St. Edmund Campion
- Pope St. John Paul II
This book introduces us to some of the best homilies in Church history, and it’s a perfect read for any priest or deacon seeking models for his preaching — and for all of us in the pews to be inspired and encouraged in our faith.
