The Holy Father linked the first week of November and our prayers for the departed with our efforts to work for peace in the world.
After praying the midday Angelus on Sunday, the end of the octave of All Souls Day, Pope Leo noted how the beginning of November brings the Church's focus in a special way to the souls of the departed.
He tied those prayers into the ongoing conflicts around the world.
I express my heartfelt appreciation for all those who, at every level, are committed to building peace in the various regions affected by war. In these last few days, we have prayed for the dead and among these, unfortunately, are many who were killed in combat and bombings, even though they were civilians, children, elderly, or sick people.
Pope Leo insisted that working to end war is the best way to honor these victims.
"If we truly want to honor their memory," he said, "we must stop the wars and put all of our efforts into negotiations."
Peace
Pope Leo's first words after his election were "Peace be with all of you," quoting the greeting given by the Risen Christ as he appeared to his disciples.
The Holy Father has since then continuously made appeals for peace, insisting that the path to global peace begins in individual hearts.
