Why you should never consult a psychic about the future

Psychics may claim to know the future, but in reality, they are dabbling in dark arts that endanger a soul's eternal destiny.

Many people, including some celebrities, consult psychics, mediums, or fortune tellers in an attempt to gain control over the future. They want to know what will happen next and are not willing to wait and see what God has in store for them.

It's never a good thing to consult any psychic, no matter how much he or she claims to know about the future. It will never end well.

Dark arts

The reality is that psychics are either scammers or, worse, being influenced by demonic spirits, who similarly do not know the future. Demons can only observe and make guesses about what will happen next. God did not reveal anything to them.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains that "God can reveal the future to his prophets or to other saints. Still, a sound Christian attitude consists in putting oneself confidently into the hands of Providence for whatever concerns the future, and giving up all unhealthy curiosity about it" (CCC 2115).

The difference between psychics and saints is that saints relate to God with humble submission. God may provide some guidance, but it is not guaranteed and the saint accepts whatever happens.

Psychics, on the other hand, actively grasp for the future and will do whatever it costs to get an answer. They also charge for their services, so if they do not receive something from a demonic source, they will invent an answer based on their own observations. They will tell the other person whatever they want to hear, deceiving them if that will get them more money.

The Catechism strongly condemns consulting any psychic or medium:

All forms of divination are to be rejected: recourse to Satan or demons, conjuring up the dead or other practices falsely supposed to "unveil" the future. Consulting horoscopes, astrology, palm reading, interpretation of omens and lots, the phenomena of clairvoyance, and recourse to mediums all conceal a desire for power over time, history, and, in the last analysis, other human beings, as well as a wish to conciliate hidden powers. They contradict the honor, respect, and loving fear that we owe to God alone (CCC 2116).

Example from the Bible

In the Old Testament, King Saul falls into despair after seeing the strength of the Philistine army and feels helpless. He wants God to speak to him, but God is silent.

Not satisfied with God's silence, he takes matters into his own hands and summons the Witch of Endor. Later this does not end well for him, as the Book of Chronicles explains:

So Saul died for his unfaithfulness; he was unfaithful to the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance, and did not seek guidance from the Lord. Therefore the Lord slew him, and turned the kingdom over to David the son of Jesse. (1 Chronicles 10:13-14)

We need to be comfortable with God's silence and instead of trying to grasp at the future, we need to live in the present, following God's will now, trusting that he has great things in store for us.
