A drunk truck driver ran head-on into a bush in southern Peru, causing the bus to careen over the side of the road, falling some 650 feet and killing nearly 40 people. Some of the passengers survived, including an 8-month-old and 4-year-old.

Pope Leo XVI mentioned the horrific crash after praying the midday Angelus this November 16. He noted the frequency of road accidents, calling us to an examination of conscience regarding the many that are caused by irresponsibility.

We "remember all those who have died in road accidents, too often caused by irresponsible behavior. Let each of us examine our conscience on this matter," he said.

Earlier, he had mentioned the tragedy in Peru.

I would also like to assure my prayers for the victims of the serious road accident that occurred last Wednesday in southern Peru. May the Lord welcome the deceased, support the injured, and comfort the bereaved families.

Pope Leo is a citizen of Peru, having served in the county as bishop from 2014 to 2023, and previously as a member of the Augustinian missions there.
