Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus centers on one simple yet profound truth: that the love of Christ is personal, merciful, and inexhaustible. For centuries, Catholics have expressed that devotion through prayer, consecration, and visible signs of faith. Among these signs are certain sacramentals — holy objects or actions that prepare the heart to receive God’s grace and strengthen one’s relationship with Him.

Here are three sacramentals closely tied to the Sacred Heart that continue to inspire and protect believers today.

1. The Image of the Sacred Heart

Few images in Christian tradition speak as directly to the heart as that of Jesus pointing to His Heart, aflame with love and surrounded by thorns. This image comes from the revelations given to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque in the 17th century, when Christ asked that His Heart be honored “in the homes of the faithful.” Displaying this image at home is not simply decorative — it is an act of enthronement, a public acknowledgment that Christ reigns within the family. You can do an official family enthronement as well.

Many families place the image in a central place of prayer, often accompanied by the short prayer: “Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in You.” The presence of this image serves as a daily reminder of God’s mercy and the call to love as He loves.

2. The Detente of the Sacred Heart

This small badge, traditionally worn over the chest, carries the inscription “Detente! The Heart of Jesus is with me.” It originated with St. Margaret Mary herself, who kept one close to her heart as a sign of protection and faith. The detente became widely used during times of illness and war, notably during the plague of Marseille in 1720 and later by Christian soldiers in Mexico and Spain.

It is not a talisman, but a tangible reminder that the Heart of Jesus guards the believer against fear and despair. Carrying a detente encourages an attitude of confidence — an inner peace born of knowing that one’s life is held in divine love.

3. The Badge of the Sacred Heart (Scapular)

Often called the “Scapular of the Sacred Heart,” this devotional item was approved by Pope Pius IX in 1876. It consists of two small pieces of cloth joined by cords and worn over the shoulders, much like traditional scapulars. One side usually bears the image of the Sacred Heart, while the other depicts the Virgin Mary. Those who wear it do so as an expression of consecration, a daily pledge to live in union with the love and mercy of Jesus. It is a silent prayer worn throughout the day — a commitment to act with compassion, patience, and fidelity.

Each of these sacramentals, simple in form yet rich in meaning, leads the faithful toward the same reality: the living presence of Christ’s love. Whether displayed, carried, or worn, they serve as gentle reminders that the Heart of Jesus is not distant, but near — ever ready to console, forgive, and renew.
