Patriots rookie TreVeyon Henderson used his cleats to raise prayers for persecuted Christians — here’s why it matters.

During the NFL’s “My Cause My Cleats” week, most players choose to honor charities or personal foundations. But Patriots rookie TreVeyon Henderson had something else on his heart — something heavier. His custom cleats were designed not for attention, but as a call for prayer: for the persecuted Christians of Nigeria, as shared by Relevant Magazine.

“It’s so easy to just bypass that,” Henderson shared. “But difficult to bypass when you realize these are brothers and sisters actually losing their lives.”

It’s a sobering thought, especially in the middle of a high-energy football season. But that’s precisely what makes it powerful. While millions watch players for touchdowns and celebrations, Henderson wanted to use his platform for something eternal. And in doing so, he reminded us what it really means to belong to the Body of Christ.

A simple post that changed everything

It all started when a teammate shared a post about the ongoing violence in Nigeria. The story stayed with him. He started to learn more: the names, the faces, the communities torn apart. He saw people clinging to Jesus through unimaginable suffering.

“They’re living out the Bible,” he said. “Jesus says those who desire to follow me must take up their cross. They’re staying faithful. It encourages me to be courageous, to be bold.”

That courage shows in more than his game. It shows in his decision to point toward a crisis that too often goes ignored — a crisis where churches are burned, families displaced, and faith can cost everything.

Faith, family, and football

Nowadays, in many Western countries following Jesus might mean facing mockery or criticism. However, in too many countries, it can mean martyrdom. Henderson knows the difference. And that’s why his cleats — worn proudly on national TV — weren’t about fashion. They were about family. Our family.

In a season when the spotlight often lands on the loudest or flashiest stories, Henderson’s quiet message cuts through: Christians are called to pray, to remember, to stand with those who suffer for the name of Christ. As Henderson shared:

“I hope it encourages us all to remain faithful. To be more courageous. To be more bold.”

It's incredible how one rookie’s cleats preached a sermon without words — one that echoed far beyond the field.
