A librarian in California recently got a delightful surprise in the mail: a library book, returned nearly 46 years after it was due back.
The book, aptly titled The Incredible Journey, was due back at the La Mesa branch of the San Diego County library on May 20, 1980. The borrower, who did not identify themselves, included a sticky note with the message "Sorry this is so late," with a smiley face.
Cassie Koldewyn, manager of the La Mesa branch, told local media that the book had a "quite powerful" smell.
“They sent it back to the right branch, even though we’re at a new address, so they clearly did some research to get it back to us," she said.
Pictures of the book were shared on the County of San Diego's social media pages.

Like many library systems, the San Diego County Library no longer charges late fees. Instead, a customer will be charged for a replacement for the book if it is not returned.
“You know, it can be a little embarrassing when you forget to return your book. We don’t want you to feel that way,” said Koldewyn. “Sometimes it happens, so I’m not surprised someone snuck it in. But really, no shame. We’re always happy to take the book back.”
Given the age of the book, it will not be returned to circulation, said Koldewyn.
Koldewyn hopes the anonymous borrower reveals themselves if they are ever nearby.
“Please come back to the library. If you’re in town, come say hi,” she said. “Let us know this was your item. We’d love to reminisce and hear what you thought about The Incredible Journey.”
A reminder of forgiveness
Koldewyn's reaction to the returned book should serve as a reminder for us all that forgiveness is always available for those who are sorry for their actions. It really is never too late, and there is no shame in righting a wrong or apologizing.
And while it is not clear why the book was kept for so long or what led to its long-delayed return, it is important that this wrong was corrected — even if it did not have any material impact on the library itself.
This is also true when it comes to sin: God's forgiveness is always available for those who repent. Even if it has been 10 years (or more!) since your last Confession, the sacrament is always available.
