Bobsled champion Elana Meyers Taylor is setting all kinds of records.

She’s the most decorated female bobsledder of all time, the oldest gold medalist in history, the most decorated Black athlete in Winter Olympics history, and the first mom to win gold in bobsledding.

And she accomplished all this while raising two children with significant disabilities.

But the title that means most to her? Christian.

She said in an interview:

One of the big reasons I was put in bobsled is to help people not only reach their goals, but come to Christ.

God put me here for a specific reason and I don’t think it’s just to win medals.

At the end of the day, I’m in this sport to glorify God, so if that means I come in last place or I win the gold medal, that’s what I’m going to do.

Besides her faith, her family fuels Taylor’s incredible drive.

Taylor and her husband, Nic Taylor, also a bobsledder, are parents of two young children with special needs. Both her sons, Nico and Noah, are deaf, and Nico has Down syndrome.

Having a special-needs son reinvigorated Taylor’s Olympic efforts. She told Olympics.com in March 2025:

Having Nico, like, that reinvigorated me. Knowing he had disabilities [motivated me] to kind of show him, like, his mom is strong and his mom can overcome obstacles. If I could do that, so could he.

Taylor learned American Sign Language (ASL) to communicate with her Deaf sons, making her one of only 30% of non-Deaf parents with a Deaf child who learn ASL to communicate with their child.

One of the most moving moments of this year’s Olympics came when she won gold and signed “Mommy won!” to her boys.

You can watch that here:

Taylor is one of a record number of mothers who took part in the Olympic Games this year.

With her history-making success, fueled by faith and family, Taylor has given her sons an incredible legacy — and shown the whole world what moms can do.
