The 16x Grammy-winning pop star Bruno Mars released his first solo album in nearly a decade last week. 'The Romantic' is causing a stir on social media where Catholics in particular are sharing his video 'Risk it All,' which has many scenes shot in a Catholic Church and is clearly honoring the sacrament of marriage.
Between the video's montage depicting elements of a traditional wedding ceremony, glimpses of the couple's happy life in early marriage as well as several decades later; and with lyrics that speak not only of wedded bliss but of hard work and sacrifice, it's clear that Mars is celebrating a type of relationship that is deep, timeless, and even sacred.
The music is in the style of a traditional Mexican romantic bolero, and Mars' honeyed voice crones lyrics such as:
I would swim across the sea just to show you / sacrifice my life just to hold you / I could go on and on to prove that you belong here in my arms
Mars plays the guitar and sings while wearing a Miraculous Medal and a crucifix around his neck. The video is no doubt a nod to his childhood Catholic faith, which according to several sources such as Beliefnet.com influences much of his music.
That being said, over the years, Mars has never been explicit about a strict adherence to Catholicism; he has even mentioned exploring other spiritual avenues such as eastern meditation.
And so as we Catholics dance to 'Risk it All' this summer -- the song that is very likely to be the wedding hit of the season -- let us say a prayer for Bruno Mars, asking God to strengthen and embolden the faith of this remarkable musician.
