New Lenox Police responded to reported threat at John Prevost’s home on Wednesday evening. Fortunately the threat was unfounded.

A lot of negative things come with fame. The pope’s family experienced that in a scary way the night of April 15, when a bomb threat was made against Pope Leo XIV’s brother at his home in the Chicago suburbs.

The New Lenox Police Department responded to a reported bomb threat at John Prevost’s home on Wednesday at 6:29 p.m. Officers asked neighbors to evacuate their homes for a short time during the investigation, according to a statement:

Upon receiving the report, officers were immediately dispatched to the scene and established a secure perimeter to ensure the safety of nearby residents.

Out of an abundance of caution, surrounding homes were notified, and asked to evacuate.

Specialized units, including the Will County Sheriff’s Office explosive detection K9 were requested to assist in the investigation.

A thorough search of the residence and surrounding property was conducted.

Thankfully, the threat proved to be unfounded.

But the incident highlights how Pope Leo's being suddenly catapulted into worldwide fame has serious and sometimes concerning effects for his family.

John Prevost is not a public figure. He is a retired Catholic school principal who spent 35 years educating children in the Archdiocese of Chicago.

For now, the New Lenox police have reminded the public that filing false reports is a serious crime and have asked anyone with information to come forward, offering this tip line. The investigation continues, as does this new and unexpected chapter for the Prevost family.
