Pope Leo XIV received Alix Didier Fils-Aimé, Prime Minister of Haiti, in audience on May 9, 2026, at the Vatican. During the visit, the Holy See discussed with the interim head of state the situation in his country, one of the poorest in the world, noting the importance of international aid in addressing the many challenges facing Haiti.
The son of a political opponent during the presidency of Jean-Claude Duvalier, Didier Fils-Aimé had embarked on a career as a businessman, but was appointed Prime Minister of Haiti in 2024 by the Transitional Presidential Council, a body created to resolve the political crisis the country has been experiencing since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021. His term was due to end last February, but he was ultimately kept in office with the support of the United States, having committed to organizing elections in the near future.
He also met with Secretary of State Pietro Parolin. During this meeting, the country’s socio-political situation, as well as issues relating to humanitarian aid, migration and security, were discussed, according to a statement from the Holy See. Reference was also made to “the necessary contribution of the international community in addressing the current difficulties.”
The “valuable contribution that the Church is making to the country at this particular time” was also highlighted. The Catholic Church indeed occupies a central and historic role in Haiti, acting not only as a religious institution but also as a social and educational pillar.
With nearly half of Haitians identifying as Catholic, its influence is essential, although it faces increasing competition from the rise of Protestant groups and the persistence of Voodoo. The Haitian Bishops’ Conference regularly speaks out against corruption and gang-related insecurity, and attempts to mediate between political actors in crisis.
Haiti has one cardinal, Bishop Chibly Langlois of Les Cayes, who was elevated to the College of Cardinals by Pope Francis in 2014. In 2021, he was injured during the devastating earthquake that struck the entire southwest of the country.
