Prime Minister Mark Carney and Pope Leo XIV discussed the Pope's new encyclical, as well as the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

The Holy See announced that on Friday, May 29, the Pope and Canada's Prime Minister Mark Carney had a telephone conversation "on the occasion of the publication of the Encyclical Magnifica Humanitas."

"The importance of developing artificial intelligence from an ethical perspective and with a human-centered approach was discussed," the note reported. The leaders also spoke of "questions of mutual interest at the regional and international levels, with particular reference to efforts in promoting peace, especially in the Middle East and in Ukraine."

Prime Minister Carney is Catholic. He took office on March 14, 2025, and was among the many heads of government to attend the inaugural Mass of Leo XIV, just over two months afterward, on May 18, 2025.

On May 27, he announced the upcoming presentation of a federal plan for artificial intelligence focused on protecting Canadians and their democracy by relying on a network of international partnerships and alliances.

The prime minister offered a reflection on his conversation with the Pope on the X network.
